When I switched over from Movable Type to WordPress over a month ago, I did so thinking that WordPress would be better for stopping comment spam. I’m finding that there is little difference in this regard between the two.

When I was on Movable Type, I was a big fan of Jay Allen’s MT-Blacklist. It didn’t stop spam, but it drastically cut it down. Switching to WordPress took away my ability to use the blacklist. As a result, I have been getting more comment spam. I do have to say that once the spam reached my blog, I like WordPress’ way of dealing with it much better than Movable Type’s. Many times, the comments will be held in moderation, keeping it from actually being posted. I still have to manually delete it though. That is also easier than Movable Type. In Movable Type, I had to go into the actual comment, delete it, and rebuild my entire website to see it disappear. In WordPress, I can delete them in bulk by checking a box for each and clicking delete, and there is no rebuilding.

Today I found a plugin for WordPress that actually uses the same blacklist as MT-Blacklist to block comment spam, and is actually much easier to update. WP-Blacklist is easy to install, and started working right away to stop all the online casino spam I was getting even as I was installing the plugin.

I highly recommended MT-Blacklist, and see no reason not to do the same with WP-Blacklist.

  1. Thanks for the link. I have looked into others, but seem to have trouble getting many of them to work at all. My limited knowledge of php is a handicap in this regard.

    Any you’d recommend?
