I’ve got NOTHING to do at work today. I often don’t have enough work to be busy all day, but yesterday and today I’ve had literally nothing. In my free time, I decided to toy around with some free forums software that I stumbled across. I thought it would be fun to have forums, but couldn’t find any software that wasn’t expensive. I came across phpbb yesterday though, which is open-source and free. I figured I’d give it a whirl. Now, when I installed Movable Type on my server last October, I knew little to nothing about the software I was installing. Installing phpbb was no easier. I first had to install php on my server, and to be honest, I still don’t really know what php is!! It took a while to figure out why I couldn’t get it to work, and then it seemed to just come to life on it’s own. Then I had to figure out how to get the database software running. That was a chore too. In the end, I got it running. If you care to check it out, or even sign up, you can view my forums here.

  1. I did the same thing. I started with phpBB, but then I went to the Invision Power Board. I thought that the IPB was a little more full featured, and they let you use it for free, but they sell a pretty nifty package with lots of upgrades and tech support. However, I’m good at fiddlin’ with things ’till they work.
