I started playing around with WordPress last night. I’ve been pondering ditching Movable Type for WordPress. After my initial experience with it, I will likely stick with Movable type. WordPress is all php, which I know nothing about how to use. I couldn’t even figure out how to add a picture file to the main page.

With all it’s limitations, at least I know how to use Movable Type. I can manipulate HTML to make my blog look the way I want it to look.

One of the strengths that I see its users attribute to WordPress is much better handling of comments. Comment spam is a problem, and WordPress does a better job of combatting it. I don’t think that alone is reason enough to ditch MT though.

The biggest problem I ran into was setting up a MySQL database. I know about as much about MySQl as I do about php. In the end I got it going, but now it looks like I screwed it up again.

Anyone know of any other free blog software (excluding Blogger, Movable Type, and WordPress)?

  1. I moved my blog a while back from Blogger to WordPress and have never looked back. I didn’t know anything about php or MySql when I started, but I managed to handle it alright. The WP ‘5 minute install’ worked as adverstised for me.

I don’t know anything about MT, never having used it, but so far I haven’t had much difficulty editing the WP template, moving stuff around, and so forth. There are a couple of commented index.php pages floating around the web that you could look at to help figure out how it works.

If you do migrate to WP, be sure to hop over to at the 404 to pick up an “alternative” template system—they are far superior to the default, imo.
