Today turned into one of those days I put in the category of “Favorite Workdays”. The easiest way for a day to get into that category is to be a “take free stuff home” day.

Our main Mac Computer guy decided that we needed to upgrade all the RAM in all our computers. Every free slot in every machine got a new Half-Gig stick of RAM. That left several 256 Meg sticks without a use. The nice thing about Macs is they use much the same hardware as PC’s. Really only the Processor and Motherboard are different. RAM works cross-platform.

So far I picked up a 256M stick of SDRAM for my Linux machine. It may or may not fit (I can’t remember what it takes). If it fits, it’s a free upgrade. If not, I can give it to my dad or my brother.

Hopefully I’ll get two sticks of PC2100 DDR-RAM for my main computer. I’m also not certain if I can use them, but free RAM is always worth a shot. I currently have two of the same type of RAM sticks in there, so if it works, I’d double my total RAM. I seem to remember reading something in my Motherboard Manual about two of the four slots being (basically) useless though.

I’m really hoping that it all works out that I can add two more sticks and end up with 1GB total. I do quite a bit of video editing, which tends to use up all available RAM.

UPDATE: Well, I lost my SDRAM stick to an older machine in the office that is simply a file server at this time. I was asked to trade it for one of the PC2100 sticks though, so it’s not all bad. I may get a 128MB SDRAM stick too, not as good as what I was excpecting, but free so I’m not complaining.

UPDATE 2: As I suspected, my new (free) RAM won’t work. I have four slots, but my mother board only supports four banks and the two Sticks I have in are two banks each. Oh well, I’ll see if my brother or dad can use it and if they can’t I’ll hold on to it for a while.
