I had a little fun today with my beloved Tivo. Actually, the fun is still in progress. Last night I did a little experimenting that required a reboot (the Tivo is a computer after all). It would allow me to get through most of the steps to getting the system going again, but when it checked the satellite, it would stall at 28%. I let it sit all night thinking maybe it was just going really slow. Nope, it was stopped completely. I couldn’t get it to start up at all because I had to go through the setup that kept locking up. Well, about a year ago, I hacked it to add a second hard drive (went from 35 hours recording time to 149 hours). When I did that, I went to the little extra effort of backing up the hard drive first. Today I am glad I did. I took the thing apart, hooked the hard drives up to my computer, and got the old software restored. Now it’s working again. The downside is I lost all of the shows that were on it, it set me back to the old version of the software that I had a year ago, and my recording settings (for recording shows) are set to a year ago. None of that is a real big deal to me, I didn’t lose any shows that I really wanted, and the rest can be easily fixed.
