Yesterday I had some time with nothing to do at work, so I was logged into my home computer and doing a few frivolous things. Then in the early to mid afternoon, the connections just stopped. You may have noticed that my blog was inaccessible after about 2:00 or so.

When I got home, I immediately started investigating. I quickly found that the cable modem was not connecting to the internet. I didn’t know why though. When I called the cable company, they said they couldn’t figure it out either, but would send a tech to check it out. I wouldn’t get an appointment for a time when I am home until next Wednesday though. Ouch!

This morning, I tried starting up the modem again and it was still not getting a signal. I decided to check the cables, just to be sure. I found the problem, and I’m not happy about it. It turns out someone CUT THE WIRE before it comes in the house. Comcast denies doing it. I have no clue who would have done it or why, but my suspicion is that it was a neighbor kid or someone pulling a prank.

I have my phone through the cable company too, and hope it wasn’t someone cutting the line thinking they were cutting the phone too (they cut it after the phone connection, but before everything else). I’m going to look into a cellular backup for my security system just in case though.

So that’s why you couldn’t get to my blog yesterday, if you tried.

  1. If the cut was made to the cabling before it gets to the network interface then these characters could be prosecuted for tampering with the Comcast network. Actually a federal offense, if my recollection is correct. (Isn’t it nice how the average joe can involve the feds in common malicious acts these days? *Tongue firmly in cheek*)

You may want to think about shielding of some kind or encase the exposed coax in galvanized conduit just to make it harder on the next ones to try.

  2. I’ve been thinking the same about putting conduit around it. They took the screw-in connector too, which required them to open the box that the phone connection is made in. It’s only screwed shut, but maybe it needs a lock.
